OVERVIEW

Safari Overview

Discover the natural wonders of Western Uganda on this scenic day tour to Semuliki National Park, Amabere Caves, and the Fort Portal crater lakes. This guided trip offers a perfect blend of geothermal marvels, lush rainforest exploration, cultural heritage, and breathtaking landscapes.

Your adventure begins at 9:00 AM with hotel pick-up in Fort Portal, followed by a scenic drive through the Albertine Rift Valley towards Semuliki National Park, approximately 88 kilometers away. This stretch offers stunning views of tea plantations, rolling hills, and rural homesteads nestled in the valleys.

Upon arrival at the park, visitors check in at the Uganda Wildlife Authority gate, pay the park entrance fee, and receive a detailed briefing from the professional park rangers. The nature walk begins shortly after, led by an experienced guide.

Explore the Famous Semuliki Hot Springs

Begin by visiting the “Nyasimbi” (female hot spring)—a smaller but highly active boiling spring with strong steamy vents. Here, guides will explain the cultural significance of the springs to the local Bakonzo people and demonstrate the extreme temperatures, often by boiling eggs right in the spring water.

From there, continue along a well-maintained forest trail through lowland tropical rainforest, home to unique bird species, butterflies, monkeys, and exotic plant life. The walk leads to the dramatic “Bintente” (male hot spring)—a towering geyser that shoots boiling water and steam several meters into the air, surrounded by mineral deposits and marshy vegetation. Please note that the hot springs are not suitable for swimming.

Visit the Amabere Ga Nyina Mwiru Caves

Following the hot springs experience, you’ll head back towards Fort Portal to visit the Amabere Caves, locally known as “Amabere Ga Nyina Mwiru.” These caves hold great cultural and mythological value, tied to ancient Tooro Kingdom stories. Inside, you’ll observe striking stalactite and stalagmite formations formed by centuries of calcium-rich water dripping from the cave ceiling.

Adjacent to the caves is a beautiful hidden waterfall, where you’ll take a short nature trail surrounded by rich vegetation, providing excellent photo opportunities and a moment to relax in the cool misty atmosphere.

Hike to the Crater Lakes Viewpoint

The tour concludes with a guided hike to a panoramic viewpoint overlooking three scenic crater lakes. These volcanic lakes are nestled among lush hills and are part of the larger Fort Portal crater lake field. The hike is relatively easy and offers spectacular photography moments, particularly during the golden hour if timing allows.

After the crater lakes visit, you’ll return to Fort Portal in the late afternoon, marking the end of this full-day nature and cultural exploration tour.
